Il suo intervento mutua le tecniche dai numerosi modelli applicativi della psicologia; i modelli più riconosciuti come validi oggi sono:

- comportamentista
- transazionalista
- psicosintesista
Vi sono poi i modelli ad approccio psicodinamico:
- junghiano
- kalffiano
- freudiano
- adleriano
- frommiano
- psicosomatista

Psicoterapia classica e breve
Possiamo distinguere due tipi di psicoterapia:
- psicoterapia classica che può durare anche alcuni anni
- psicoterapia breve che dura al massimo quattro, cinque mesi.
Nel secondo caso è indispensabile porsi, in accordo con il paziente, un obiettivo da raggiungere che deve essere contrattato entro le prime quattro, cinque sedute e concluso nelle venti, venticinque.
